New Media Rights will be at the KPBS Explore Local Content Program Orientation on September 18th and 19th!
We’ll be speaking about what kind of legal issues filmmakers, podcasters and other content creators need to be aware of throughout all stages of production, as well as how copyright and licensing affects production.
When: September 18th at 6pm (in person), September 19th at 1pm (virtual only)
Where: KPBS
5200 Campanile Drive
San Diego, CA 92182
About the discussion
The KPBS Explore Local Content Project was established with the goal of providing more local programming for San Diego audiences. KPBS offers storytellers seed funding and the chance to develop their concept for distribution across KPBS platforms. Most of the programs that have been part of the Explore program are created by local San Diego producers who highlight important local topics, people and culture of the San Diego community. You can read more about the program and RSVP for the orientation workshops here: https://www.kpbs.org/tv/kpbs-explore
The KPBS Explore program orientation sessions will introduce creators to important information they need to know before they submit their proposals for their original programming. Part of the orientation workshop will include a presentation from New Media Rights. What legal issues might come up during pre-production, principal photography, and post-production? What kind of things should you be thinking about before you hire the crew, actors, editors and other creators? What kind of contracts are involved at each stage? How does copyright protect your work, how does it protect the work of others? How do you use third party content in your production, and what steps do you need to take to properly do so? We’ll answer these questions and leave plenty of time for Q&A.
Update after the event
Thank you to all who attended both of the workshops! Assistant Director Erika Lee and Student Fellow Jaylene Potter covered a lot of ground and answered plenty of questions along the way.

Student Fellow Jaylene Potter had this to say about the workshops:
"Speaking with the KPBS Explore Program participants was incredibly rewarding! We covered the basics of copyright law and addressed any questions participants had about their projects. Hearing their unique pitches was inspiring and reminded me how important it is to make legal education accessible to creatives. This is exactly why I love working with New Media Rights—helping artists navigate the legal landscape empowers them to pursue their projects with confidence."
If you weren't able to make it to the orientation workshop, you can check out the Explore Program page and even watch our presentation on the KPBS YouTube page. If you're interested in submitting an idea, check out the Explore Program website! The deadline to submit your idea is October 10th.
Here are some photos from the in person event. Thanks to KPBS and the Film Consortium San Diego for having us!
