It’s been a busy few months here at New Media Rights! We finished our spring semester, and have just started our summer semester - welcome to our new summer students!
As the days get longer and the creative energy heats up, we’ve been busy planting seeds, growing new ideas, and celebrating some exciting milestones. Here’s what’s been blooming at New Media Rights:
Honored by the San Diego County Bar Association
We are proud to announce that New Media Rights has received the Distinguished Organization Award from the San Diego County Bar Association. The award is given to a group or organization that has made significant, favorable impact on some facet of the legal system, the legal community or profession, or civics education. This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to providing accessible legal services, fostering innovation, and protecting creators’ rights in the digital age. We’re deeply grateful to California Western School of Law, our students, and supporters like you who make this work possible.
Freshly Updated: Secret Audio Recording Guide
Ever wondered what the rules are when you want to record law enforcement? The First Amendment protects the right to photograph and record matters of public interest in public places - including law enforcement acting in their official capacity. We've updated our Field Guide to Secret Audio and Video Recordings to include information about important do's and don'ts when recording law enforcement.
Into the Community: March Mingle
We loved connecting with colleagues and friends at March Mingle, San Diego's largest tech and startup networking event! This year marked the 20th anniversary of the event. Events like this remind us just how strong and collaborative our community is—and how much fun it is to step away from the desk and catch up in person.
Stories that Matter: Desert Angel
Providing legal support to creators who want to tell meaningful and impactful stories is a core part of the work that we do here at New Media Rights. We are proud to have worked on Desert Angel, a new documentary by Vincent DeLuca that tells the inspiring, heartbreaking and human stories of migrants and aid workers that show the reality of immigration at our southern border. The film has already been accepted to and won awards at numerous film festivals already - congratulations to the Desert Angel team!
Talking IP Careers with Law Students
In March, California Western School of Law's Career and Professional Development Office hosted an IP careers panel that NMR Executive Director Art Neill and Assistant Director Erika Lee moderated. Two of the three attorneys on the panel were also NMR alumni!
From breaking into IP law to building meaningful, impact-driven careers, the conversation was packed with insights, real talk, and plenty of encouragement. The future of IP law is looking bright!
Hats off to Our Graduating 3Ls!
A huge congratulations to our graduating third year law students who have received their hard-earned diplomas! Our students are such an important part of the services that we provide to hundreds of creators, innovators and internet-users every year. We could not do the work without them, and we are so proud of their dedication and their amazing work. Whether you’re heading into big law, public interest and public service, startups, or something all your own, we can’t wait to see what you do next!
Thank you as always for your support, and have a great summer!
All the best,
Art, Erika and the entire New Media Rights team
