Though the thought of facing censorship or punishment for expressing your right to free speech may seem remote as a student, in today’s interconnected society, it’s almost impossible to keep your speech from reaching another student at your school. Whether through old-fashioned gossip or social media, your speech The legal world and schools in particular are still struggling with how to handle students who are better informed, more opinionated, better connected, and have the ability to communicate to hundreds of other people over the internet.

In cases of serious suppression of free speech, your first step should be to contact the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). With associations around the country, your local ACLU office will be the most knowledgeable when it comes to your particularized area.
