Mayra Hernandez was born in Mexico City and has lived in San Diego most of her life. She currently serves as Intramural Athletics Director for Cal Western’s Student Bar Association. Before coming to law school, she obtained a Bachelors and Masters in mathematics. After which she worked on research in applied mathematics and taught mathematics from elementary on to college.  

In law school Mayra has helped trademark applicants as they navigate the trademarking process. Mayra has written about virtual worlds and is interested in cryptoart. Not an artist by trade, she loves to see the creative process unfold. Art being older than written language it’s so intertwines with our humanity that it can’t but also in simple and complex ways touch notions of how societies are organized and connect. As new media forms mature our own legal systems mature and evolve alongside, while at the same time offering our science and technology vitality in new expressive outlets. 

In her free time. Mayra enjoys hanging out, traveling, hiking, and being in the outdoors. She loves trying out new recipes. Being mostly vegetarian for the past decade has given her new opportunities to re-invent old favorite recipes or to think of new combinations. Mayra is a certified yoga teacher and can’t wait to go out dancing! 

I was born and raised in San Diego, CA and I am a 3L at California Western. Prior to law school, I graduated from University of California, Irvine with a BA in Business Administration. Because of my longtime career aspiration of becoming a sports agent, I joined UC Irvine Athletics as a Sports Marketing intern where I was the lead Community Relations intern in strengthening student-athlete presence and influence in Orange County.

During law school, I joined the Entertainment and Sports Law Society and applied my legal skills as a Law Clerk at Aguirre & Severson LLP where I realized how my work can have a profound impact on a client’s interests. My passion for the Sports and Entertainment industry coupled with my passion for creating opportunities for others encouraged me to be a part of New Media Rights in helping small businesses and creators reach their full potential.

I live close to Downtown San Diego with my girlfriend and cat, Dallas (named after the Dallas Cowboys of course!). I enjoy running, conducting sports data research, and watching The Office (I’m a HUGE fan!).

I was born and raised in San Diego and I am a current 3L at Cal Western. I am currently the Vice President of the Student Intellectual Property Law Association. Prior to law school, I graduated from Cal State San Marcos and later went on to USD to obtain my paralegal certificate. I worked as a paralegal for two years for an employment law firm. During my time there I had the opportunity to help small business owners start their business by helping them incorporate, draft articles of incorporation and meeting minutes. I enjoyed helping people start their dream business and this is where my passion began to want to further help creators and entrepreneurs bring their dreams to life. I am passionate about helping others achieve their dreams and be legally protected in doing so!

I live close to the beach with my husband and two cats (Nala and Julius) and enjoy going outside as much as possible. I enjoy running, hiking, camping, and traveling to new places. I enjoy going to the movies (when they were open) and I am a huge Marvel fan! I look forward to having all the new Marvel movies released soon so that I can go watch them!

Erica is a San Diego native and is her second year at California Western School of Law. She currently serves as the treasurer for both Entertainment and Sports Law Society and Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. Before coming to law school, she graduated from UC Santa Cruz with BAs in Business Economics and Psychology and worked at a commercial real estate company.

Erica grew up playing music and has friends/family who are musicians and artists, which is how she became interested in working with those in the entertainment industry. Her goal is to pursue a career in the entertainment and/or intellectual property field working with people to help protect their creative contents and also represent artists. She is passionate about helping people and hopes to apply her business and psychology background by guiding and advising clients. 

In her free time, Erica enjoys hanging out at the beach, hiking and camping, or cooking and baking. She also has a rescue pup named Penny who is super energetic but very loving. Lastly, quite hard in these times, but Erica loves going to live shows. She can’t wait until concerts are back!

Jonathan is a third-year law student at California Western School of Law. Jonathan values heart, honesty, and respect, and carries those values into all realms of his life. At his time at California Western, he has been Vice President of the Entertainment and Sports Law Society and a competitor of California Western’s alternative dispute resolution team (ADR). As a competitor on the ADR team, Jonathan won first place at the Regional American Bar Association Sports Law competition and was invited to compete in the National competition in February of 2021.

Jonathan intends to work within entertainment industry with the goal of guiding and protecting artists interest, goals, and headspace. Jonathan believes that entertainment, and music specifically, are powerful forces with the power to inspire and move culture. In 2020, Jonathan wrote piece on Hip-Hop’s influence on culture and politics titled “The Sovereign Nation of Hip-Hop.”

In his free time, Jonathan loves to spend his time at the gym, a basketball court, or spending quality time with his dog, Quavo, an adorable and charismatic Dachshund-Chihuahua mix.

Brandon Weinreb’s social media background and passion for video games is what motivated him to join New Media Rights and help creative entrepreneurs. Brandon is completing his second-year at California Western School of Law. He is interested in pursuing a career in entertainment law or intellectual property, and further hopes to become in-house counsel for a major entertainment or video game company. 

Before coming to law school, Brandon was a YouTube content creator. He created uniquely engaging video-game-based content to amass a social media following of nearly 400,000 subscribers and accumulate over 85 million worldwide views. By working with established brands in the esports and gaming industry, such as G-Fuel Energy, KontrolFreek, and Ironside Computers, Brandon acquired professional level sponsorships by providing organic in-video product advertisements.

This trimester, Brandon is an Associate Writer for the California Western Law Review and is currently researching and writing a paper about employment law and its application to esports and the competitive video game industry. 

Brandon hopes to utilize his unique background and passion as an online content creator to better assist creative entrepreneurs with any legal challenges they may face.

John is entering his second year at California Western School of Law and is the current President of school’s local American Constitution Society chapter. John has a passion for working with creative professionals, entrepreneurs, and with the technology industry at large. While exploring other fields, John is most strongly exploring a career in data privacy. Most of his interest in these fields came from his father’s passion for technology and creativity within his entrepreneurial ventures. 

Prior to starting his law school journey, John worked as a technician for Apple, Inc. for about 5 years where he explored his passion for technology and developed a thorough interest for data privacy and related legal issues stemming from modern consumer electronics and services. In an effort to help empower underserved communities, John has also worked for a northern San Diego County non-profit organization for the past 7 years helping abused women navigate the legal system. 

John’s enjoyed spending time with his adorable lab-dachshund mix, and binging shows and movies on Netflix and Hulu in his free time. He also enjoys hiking and flying his drone in new areas in an effort to capture perfect landscape photos. 

I came to law school because I wanted to help people. I always felt a strong connection with art and entertainment, and when I was finally in law school I realized that I can blend both of these passions into one. And now entering into my third year, I am finally starting to get on the path of IP and Entertainment law, still yet to know fully where that will take me.

I am interested in pursuing a career in intellectual properties and entertainment law after law school. I am a member of our entertainment and sports law society, as well as the ACS.

My main goal while working here is to see a project to fruition and feel the reward of seeing our client satisfied with their product because of what we were able to do for them.

In my spare time, I relax with my dog Louis while either watching some YouTube or gaming for a bit. I also enjoy cooking new and exotic recipes that are hard to find in restaurants.

Madison “Madi” Stern is completing her last year at California Western School of Law. Madi is passionate about working with creatives and entrepreneurs. She has familial roots in design and small businesses and learned early on to appreciate the beauty and value of those who think “outside of the box” to define and create their own success. Madi is a strong believer in empowering our youth in local, underserved communities. In 2016, she initiated a Teen Science Café Network chapter at the Elementary Institute of Science in Southeast San Diego.

Madi has held numerous positions in various industries before deciding to return to school to pursue a degree in law. After working in the nonprofits sector in New York City for a few years, Madi switched gears and partook in a 3-month immersive product management program, where she gained the skill set to lead cross-functional initiatives and bring physical and digital products to life. She moved back to San Diego in 2015 and opened an apparel brick and mortar store, which became profitable within months. Unfortunately, due to a conflict stemming from a naïve decision to use a DIY legal form website instead of hiring an attorney, she lost her business. This experience taught her about the importance of legal work and ignited her desire to become an attorney. Madi wants to use her legal knowledge and background in business to help other entrepreneurs steer clear from common mistakes that are made when starting and building a business.

Madi was born and raised in San Diego. She received her Bachelor’s degree in International Business and Chinese at Whittier College in Los Angeles. Madi is an avid tennis player. Her second favorite sport is boxing. She also enjoys surfing, skiing, snowboarding, and hiking. Madi loves to travel and absorb different cultures. When she is not studying or playing sports, she is on Duolingo learning new languages.
