New Media Rights Public Interest Fellowship
New Media Rights seeks attorneys and recent law school graduates who have funding through their law school, firm, or otherwise for positions with New Media Rights. We are also open to working with attorneys and recent grads on Equal Justice Works projects.
The Fellow will perform and supervise students (if barred) in one-to-one transactional and preventative work for independent creatives, small online businesses, and average internet users. They will also assist with creating and editing our text and video legal guides. Finally, they will be involved in our outreach into the tech, art, and business communities. We encourage any funded attorney or recent graduate who wants to develop practical skills in media, Internet, and IP law to apply.
The Fellow could also participate in policy work with the Copyright Office, FCC, or other regulatory agencies. We are also seeking Fellows for opportunities performing and supervising students in internet-related litigation.
The nature of the position and its level of supervision depends on experience and bar admission.
Since we receive a wide variety of potential cases, a Fellow's work assignments can often be tailored directly to their interests. For example, if a fellow is interested in working with journalists, then that Fellow may primary work with journalists who submit issues.
We encourage any funded attorney or recent graduate who want to develop practical skills media, Internet, and IP law (while working in the public interest) to apply:
Required qualifications:• The candidate must be a licensed attorney and a member of the bar in good standing OR a recent law school graduate.
• The sponsoring firm, law school or other organization must provide funding for a full‐time or close to full time position for a minimum of 3.5 months; the position is not funded by New Media Rights.
Preferred candidates should:
• Be familiar with or focused on internet, intellectual property, media law or other specific areas we work in: copyright, trademark, internet law, rights of publicity, privacy
• Have a strong interest in working with internet users and independent creators like journalists, filmmakers, start-ups, software developers, game developers (as opposed to established, corporate firms)
• Have a strong interest in understanding how internet technology works
Ideal candidates would optionally:Be admitted to the California bar or awaiting results
Work directly at our San Diego office
